What is EFT?
Emotional Freedom Technique is an evidence-based method that provides stress relief and promotes healing. It is sometimes considered to fit into the field of complementary and alternative medicine and can be used in conjunction with medical and psychiatric care. EFT is a non-invasive and easy to apply self-help method based on research that shows that unprocessed emotions and traumatic experiences contribute to disease and pain and may hold us back from achieving our goals. Releasing these experiences and emotions creates conditions in the body conducive to healing and pain relief and can help us to function better in our work and relationships.
EFT has been described as emotional acupuncture, or acupuncture without needles, because it involves stimulating certain points on the energy meridians by tapping them with your fingertips while mentally working through the emotion, experience or belief that needs to be processed.
There is a growing body of research through clinical trials that show it rapidly eliminates or reduces emotional discomfort and also that it significantly reduces stress hormones in the body. Many psychiatrists and counselors are now using it in clinical practice, which greatly speeds up treatment. It is also increasingly being used in Emergency Rooms and Medical practices. Please see my blog and resources or eftuniverse.com for examples.
In clinical trials EFT has been shown to be helpful for phobias, stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, pain, and many other problems.
It is said and backed by new science, that 95% of what we do is run by our subconscious mind. Our productivity, goal achieving behavior, financial behavior, and how we interact with others are all run mainly from our subconscious based on programs that we developed in response to our early often unprocessed experiences, many of which occurred in the first 6 to 8 years of life. Our mind-body has held them as a protective mechanism to keep us safe. However, they become a problem if they constantly trigger our stress response causing us to develop chronic stress.
EFT can help. In place of the former fight/flight/freeze response, we can change to an emotional state that promotes relief, peace, relaxation and happiness. New science shows, that this in turn can turn on positive changes in gene activity and send cascades of beneficial chemical reactions through the body.
EFT can very effectively release stress and negative emotions in the moment, but its most powerful and biggest benefit lies in healing the unprocessed experiences of the past, large and small. Working with a qualified practitioner along with your individual independent work is helpful for learning to use EFT effectively. For more complex issues you may need to work with a mental health professional.
